Thanks to absolutely amazing volunteers locally and the generosity of our donors, we've been able to help many of the dogs and cats at the Rutherford Co, NC shelter. The shelter fills up quickly, and when they are full owner surrenders can be euthanized and anything that finishes 72-hour stray hold is also in danger. Local boarding is usually available, and the pull fee of $75 covers spay/neuter and basic shots.

SPONSORS help us get animals out to safety while awaiting rescue since the shelter can't hold them. I have a general fund that I use, or you can donate directly to rescues or the local volunteers. Whew, guys, we were busy in June, 2011! We were able to move 209 lucky dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to safety! THANK YOU to the shelters, drivers, rescues and everyone else who helped!

A little bit of before and after...

Every day pleas come via email for animals that will be killed if we can't find them rescue. Some of the animals are in great shape, some not so much.

At the shelter in Dry Fork, VA, the lives of the dogs are measured in days, not in weeks. A plea comes through, and by the end of the week if rescue wasn't found, they die. A posting went out for a group of dogs and CAWL in MD spoke up for one dog. Then they decided if they were picking up one, they might as well pick up another. And so this girl was chosen...

Matted, dirty, but beautiful anyway... She caught a ride on the next transport and went to CAWL for some TLC. And thank you to CAWL for seeing that this matted, sad, death row dog was beautiful and deserved a chance.

That's the beauty of what we do in rescue. We can help a nameless, death row dog find a way to rescue where she is now Luna with people wanting to adopt her and offer her a real home at last. I like to call it a "life upgrade" - and I'm so honored and blessed that I can play a part in it.

Thanks everyone - all of the animals have either been rescued, adopted or in the case of three of them possibly euthanized. But considering what we were up against... we done good!

I'm copying this post from Moondog Rescue on Facebook who has been working hard to save these animals. Please forward this around and let's see if we can save these lives. The shelter is packed to the gills and these are all slated to be euthanized on Tuesday. Please do NOT contact the shelter if you can't help - they can't make more space, they can't help that their intake numbers are through the roof. You can sponsor, you can rescue, you can spread the word - you CAN make a difference. I know it seems daunting but, hey, don't we just love challenges around here at Rural Shelter Transports? I think we do.

I will continue to update the list below as more dogs are rescued. You can also email the shelter and sponsor them.

URGENT CALL FOR NETWORKERS, PLEDGERS, FOSTERS, RESCUES, ADOPTERS!!!!!!!
THERE IS A NEW DEVASTATING EUTH LIST AT GREENVILLE COUNTY ANIMAL CARE SERVICES IN GREENVILLE, SC!!!
No one believes that we are going to be able to help these animals because it is a holiday weekend and most people are away. There are a few of us holding down the fort, though, and I say that we can come together and SAVE SOME LIVES. The key, as always, is teamwork. I am asking all of my friends to choose 1 or more dogs as your "networking project". This means that you will be the person responsible for email rescue groups about your pooch, fundraising for pull fees/transport fees, and acting as a general advocate in order to get that animal to safety.

I am not a big fan of the words "can't" and "no". I realize I have a lot of friends who feel the same way. We might not be able to save all these dogs, but we can sure as heck try. And you know what....I truly believe that if we come together this weekend, we are going to see ANOTHER MIRACLE AT GREENVILLE.

It's been a while... transport-land has been all-encompassing and I haven't had time to catch up with posting here. BUT... I'm back... I think... I'm sure I will have something compelling to post soon :) Actually, stay tuned for a post about GYPSY, a sweet dog dumped at a shelter with two broken legs and rescued by one of my very favorite rescues!

Super giant overnight challenge - 2011 version - Sat 1/29 - 50 dogs and cats need your help!

So remember I said I wasn't doing huge transports anymore?

I guess I lied.

But hey, it's hard to say no when you know these animals have no other chance - and only a ride separates them from their rescues!

SO - here we go - the super mega 2011 overnight challenge.

Here's the current list. They are slated to arrive in Fairfax at 9 pm on Saturday. If you can pick up in Fredericksburg, we stop there. You just have to get them back on board on Sunday (9 am in Fairfax, 10:35 am Baltimore, etc.). You can drive them as far north as you want, I don't mind (grin). You can also pick up in Baltimore Saturday night at ~10:30 pm. If you can't overnight but can drive animals to Baltimore Saturday night, let me know.

I know this is a long shot. It's Thursday. But gotta try, right?

Lincoln Co, NC: Petfinder website is now up and running!

Good news! Lincoln Co now has their Petfinder site UPDATED and this will hopefully increase the number of animals adopted and rescued from the shelter. I wanted to post an update here so folks didn't wonder why the postings about Lincoln disappeared suddenly. Rest assured that I am still posting their animals, and will hopefully be able to get many, many more on the road to rescue!

Some transports are extra special...

All of our transports are meaningful, with wonderful animals, drivers, rescues, volunteers, you name it. But sometimes there's a transport that just feels special. The transport out of SC this weekend was one of those.

It was like a "who's who" of types of dogs that don't often get the chance to go to rescue... the big brown dog, the senior, and the black puppy with mange. What a wonderful thing to see these dogs get a chance!

And what teamwork it takes to do this... from the shelter staff and/or volunteers who assess and take pictures of the animals in the first place to the volunteers who pull animals from the shelters to the rescues who commit to them to the drivers who get them up the road, it is an amazing process.

Zoey, Maverick and Summer are proof that we CAN make a difference. I know in the world of sheltering and rescue it sometimes feels hopeless. But look at these faces - the big brown dog, the old dog, the black puppy with mange - and know that you CAN help.

Can't resist, I had to post this one. DUKE is a big, skinny Bloodhound boy who was transported this past weekend from NC up to NJ where he was met by his brand new family (yay, Duke!). But on his way, he met lots of fabulous transporters and at the hand-off in NJ Duke decided to give our tireless transporter Teddy a big ol' Bloodhound hug... how cute is this?! Thanks for the great picture, Chris!

April statistics are in... 114 lives saved on our transports!

We moved a total of 114 lucky dogs, cats, puppies and kittens on our transports in April - THANK YOU! I've put pictures below of some of the animals that were able to benefit from all the time given by the volunteers who drive every weekend to make this happen!

The actual totals are:

47 dogs 8 mos old or older
44 puppies/dogs under 8 mos
5 cats 8 mos old or older
18 kittens/cats under 8 mos

Pretty amazing - thank you all! Total for 2010 through April (I know, I'm way behind)? 474 animals saved!!!

And you know the best part about it? All of the rescues are screened so not only are these animals out of the shelters, but they went to good places. "Saved" doesn't stop when they leave the shelter - "saved" means they've found a rescue that will commit to them for life!

The great overnight challenge... WE DID IT!!! ALL overnights filled - WOW!

Holy moly, we did it!

I've been doing *smallish* transports lately because... well, because my other-than-rescue life has been booked solid. So this week, we have so many needing a ride, and I just can't say no without trying... but we need help and lots of it!

We're struggling terribly with overnights this week so I'm listening them here in a numbered list and I'll update it every time someone gets a taker. Spread the word! There are three different transports and the times are noted below. If you're in Maryland, we can work on getting the animals north. They just need to be back on board on Sunday (9 am Fairfax, 10:35 am Baltimore, etc.).

Generous donations got Ernie out of the shelter and into boarding... now he needs your help again!

Remember this boy? He was out of time at the Caroline County, VA shelter and headed for euthanasia when several generous people donated to pay for his vetting and his boarding so we could save his life. Unfortunately, we need to go a little further to give Ernie another chance: When he was vetted, he was heartworm tested and is positive for heartworms. The vet is willing to give a great price on heartworm treatment but we need to raise an additional $350 to pay for treatment and boarding while he's treated. If you can donate even the smallest amount, it will help us make sure that Ernie really does get his second chance. There's something special about this boy!

Help needed to get mom dog and her puppies out of the shelter and off to rescue!

Every day (sometimes many, many times a day), I receive emails/pleas from various shelters asking for rescue help for their animals that are out of time. I forward them out... and then there's not much I can do but wait and see what comes in as transport requests. Needless to say, I'm always thrilled when I find out some of the dogs (or cats) are getting out safely.

Of course, then the work begins to get them on transport safely and to their rescue. We have guidelines for our transports that are in place after years of experiences to keep animals safe. And sometimes those guidelines lead to a little more logistical effort to save an animal.

This mom and her adorable babies are at the Chester County, SC shelter just waiting for help. Wooftown Rescue in NY (http://www.wooftowndoggydaycare.com/adopt_a_dog) has space for this little family. Now... we have to get them there. Right now mom and pups aren't feeling well and are being treated. We can't move them until we can get them healthy. They also need to travel in their own crate on transport so they don't pick up germs as they head from each "leg" of the transport to the next. All of this starts to add up financially... and sometimes we have to send out a plea for help!

One-Eyed Jack... Lost and Found!

When transporting animals, we try very hard to make sure that they are transported safely from start to finish. But sometimes accidents happen, and when you're dealing with animals a little slip up can be a disaster.

Meet "One-Eyed Jack." This little Beagle boy was rescued originally from a hoarder, and then was in what was to be a temporary foster home before he went to his rescue, Penny Angels Beagle Rescue in NJ.

We had a wonderful driver who brought him all the way from Greensboro, NC to Richmond, VA... and then disaster struck when Jack was in the vehicle of the next driver and escaped around 4 pm. What followed was almost 24 hours of dedication from volunteers (including a nearly all-night search from our driver who had already driven from Greensboro to Richmond) and ultimately the foster mom who had sent him with tears on his way to a rescue. This little dog had no desire to be caught and even though he was sighted again and again, nobody could get close enough to catch him. He continued to cross over a busy road, though luckily he did stay in the general area where he was lost.

When it became clear that we just weren't going to catch this little boy, his foster family offered to drive up and after a 3+ hour trip arrived in Richmond. Armed with one of Jack's favorite treats (burgers!), his foster dad walked into the woods and came back out with... Jack! I can't express how relieved I was to get the phone call that he was SAFE (I had been continually nervous when the phone would ring, afraid he'd finally run out of luck with so many major roads nearby). It's almost like Jack was just waiting for his people to get there. And because it sure seems like Jack had decided that he knew where he belonged, his fosters are turning into his adopters and will be catching this special (and wily) boy!

I'm hoping for pictures from his new home soon... I will post them as soon as I get them. But here is the picture taken today just after his fosters finally had him safely on a leash... with that burger still hanging out of his mouth...

HUGE thanks to Rhonda who went above, beyond, and above and beyond some more in trying to catch this little wanderer. Thanks, too, to David, Brenda, Mary Beth, Pam, and everyone else who spent so many hours keeping him in sight and keeping him out of the road and alive long enough for his people to get there and get him to safety!

And congratulations to One-Eyed Jack and his new family... I think he's right where he belongs, even if he had to take a bit of a perilous detour to get there!

New start for my blog!

I've neglected my blog terribly lately and after having some ideas sent to me from a co-coordinator... I think it's time to change the focus a bit. The shelter postings are better served by my rescue lists and Yahoo groups. The transport pleas are hard to keep updated here and between email/Facebook/Twitter/Google Docs I think we're good. So...

How about a place for special pleas? Fundraising? Stories of special dogs, special rescues, special cats, special people? I'll post our monthly statistics, too, because that is certainly something to celebrate.

Let me know what you think. I hope that people will enjoy the new idea for the blog... and will also find ways they can help the animals in need while celebrating our successes!
